Rapid education?
For 2022, it will NOT be mandatory to have river certification. However, we strongly advice everyone participating the River class to take a course and know their skills.
This is what ÅEW expected of participants in the RIVER CLASS. The participant must have skills and knowledge of:
This can be proven by any of the following:
Åre Extreme will provide paddling courses “Grön fors” 28-29 June and 29-30 June in the Åre area, which can be booked here.
The temperature
The temperature in the water varies a lot along the course. Remember that it is primarily melting water and rain water that affect the flow in the rapids. The temperature in the water varies from 6C – 17C degrees depending on the weather in the spring. The air temperature also affects the feeling of the temperature.
Clothes
There is no mandatory clothing for those who paddle the rapids or those who paddle on the lake. The organization recommends wetsuits or dry suits for those who feel insecure about the choice of clothing.
Gore Tex jacket and trousers are also a good option if you do not have the above equipment.
Water level?
The organization will paddle through and have a good view of the rapids the weeks before the start. The goal is to always run the rapids for River Klass Solo and Duo as long as the organization can ensure safety during the competition.
Too much water
Too much water means that there is no backwater for the organization’s safety boats or for the participant to seek protection during a possible swim.
At high water levels, many trees are in the water next to the rapids, which means immediate danger. If a participant tips and is pulled towards the trees, drowning is a great risk.
However, the rapids are technically easier to paddle at high water levels but more dangerous.
Too little water
Too little water means an increased risk of breaking your expensive surfskis and get personal injuries. Congestion in the rapids becomes significant as there is only one line at shallow water.
Portage
The RIVER class has two mandatory lifts/portages where all participants must carry the kayak past two different rapids that can not be paddled. The lift will be clearly marked with flags. The LAKE classes have NO mandatory kayak lifts.
